Vaccination Urgency as School Starts

As children gear up to return to classrooms next week, health officials in British Columbia are emphasizing the critical need for parents to update their children's vaccination records.

A Surge of Illnesses on the Horizon

The onset of fall typically sees a rise in illnesses like COVID-19, RSV, and the flu, but this year there's an alarming addition: measles. Dr. Brian Conway, the medical director of the Vancouver Infectious Diseases Centre, revealed that over 200 measles cases—either confirmed or suspected—have surfaced in the province this year, a situation not witnessed in a generation.

"We've watched vaccination rates plummet from over 90% to the 60s and low 70s," Conway stated in an interview with 1130 NewsRadio. "This is not enough to protect our community. We must return to previous standards, especially before children engage fully in school activities."

Immediate Action Required

Dr. Conway is stressing that parents should take advantage of this period to ensure their kids receive vaccinations before they re-enter crowded classrooms. He noted, "This is a prime opportunity to secure lifelong immunity against measles if your child received their first shot by age one."

Flu Vaccine Around the Corner

Although the flu vaccine isn’t currently available in B.C., it will be free and accessible at pharmacies starting sometime between Labor Day and Thanksgiving. Conway urges families to get vaccinated together, targeting at least 50% of the general population and 70-80% of those at highest risk.

Combine Vaccines for Maximum Protection

In an urgent call to action, Conway advocates for individuals to receive both the flu and COVID-19 vaccines simultaneously. Both Pfizer and Moderna are expected to roll out updated vaccines this fall, which will be crucial for protecting vulnerable populations.

"If you're uncertain about vaccinations, don't rely on social media misinformation. Consult healthcare professionals for factual answers," he advised.

Free Vaccines Available for Kids

Dr. Martin Lavoie, B.C.'s deputy public health officer, reminded parents that children under 18 are eligible for publicly funded vaccines against numerous diseases, including measles and polio. Schools routinely offer HPV vaccinations in Grade 6 and additional vaccinations in Grade 9 through health clinics.
