A startling new study published in JAMA reveals a dire situation: plummeting childhood vaccination rates could allow measles and other once-eradicated diseases to stage a comeback in the United States.

Their shocking findings? If vaccination rates remain unchanged, there’s an 83% likelihood that measles could resurface, potentially resulting in over 850,000 cases!

The Ripple Effect of Decreased Vaccinations

A mere 10% decrease in the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine could skyrocket that number to a staggering 11.1 million cases in just 25 years. And if vaccination drops by 50%, the nightmare scenario unfolds: a predicted 51 million cases of measles, along with millions of rubella, polio, and diphtheria infections, and a chilling estimate of 159,000 fatalities.

A New Approach to Fighting Measles

While vaccination remains the cornerstone of public health, a biotech company named NanoViricides is exploring a different path. They have launched preclinical trials on an antiviral drug, NV-387, aimed at combating the measles virus.

Anil Diwan, the company’s executive chairman, emphasized the critical need for effective treatment options. "Viral spread cannot be contained without a drug to alleviate illness and halt the virus's transmission," he stated.

The company intends to validate NV-387 through lab tests and animal studies. Diwan strongly believes that integrating therapeutics with vaccination could be vital during outbreaks, as the virus could continue to thrive without an effective treatment.
