While there have been numerous reports of both acute and chronic pancreatitis among users of these drugs, the exact link to the medications remains unconfirmed. The aim of the study is clear: to pinpoint those most at risk of adverse reactions.

How the Study Works

Under the MHRA's Yellow Card scheme, which allows the public to report adverse effects from medications, any patient aged 18 and over suffering from severe reactions is urged to log their experiences online. Participants will also be asked if they would contribute to additional research, potentially providing saliva samples for genetic risk assessment.

A Cautionary Note on Weight Loss Jabs

As weight loss drugs gain traction as solutions for obesity and even type 2 diabetes, health officials remind users these jabs are not a magic solution. Typical side effects include nausea, constipation, and diarrhea. Alarmingly, some evidence suggests Mounjaro may lessen the effectiveness of oral contraceptives.

The Cost of Adverse Drug Reactions

The implications of these drug-related issues are significant. According to Dr. Alison Cave, nearly one-third of medication side effects could be avoided through genetic testing, which could save the NHS over £2.2 billion yearly just in hospital costs.
