Massive Recall of Window Air Conditioners in Canada!

A shocking safety alert has been issued as tens of thousands of window air conditioners are being recalled across Canada due to serious concerns over potential mould exposure, which may trigger respiratory issues. Health Canada has raised the alarm about this alarming situation.

What's Behind the Recall?

The affected units, known as U and U+ window air conditioners, are manufactured by Midea and sold under various brand names, including Midea, Comfort Aire, Danby, Insignia, and Keystone. This recall is a collaborative effort between Health Canada, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), and GD Midea Air-Conditioning Equipment.

Why the Risk?

Health Canada reports that the design flaws in these units can cause water to accumulate, allowing mould to flourish. The recall notice cautions that exposure to mould can lead to significant health risks, particularly respiratory problems and infections.

The Numbers Speak Volumes!

Nearly 46,000 of these air conditioners were sold in Canada, with a staggering 1.7 million sold in the United States. These units hit the market between March 2020 and May 2025, raising concerns about widespread exposure.

No Confirmed Cases Yet, But Warnings Abound!

While there have been no officially confirmed health incidents in Canada thus far, reports indicate five cases of mould found in Canadian units as of June 3. Meanwhile, the company has documented 152 similar reports in the U.S., including 17 instances where consumers experienced troubling symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, sore throats, allergic reactions, and respiratory infections attributed to mould.

What Should Consumers Do?

Health Canada is urging anyone who has purchased one of these affected air conditioners to immediately contact the company for a free repair or refund. Refunds will be processed based on the purchase or manufacture date, ensuring consumers can remedy this situation promptly.
