For the second time this month, Costco Canada is pulling its yogurt off the shelves due to health concerns. On September 23, a recall notice was released for Kirkland Signature Probiotic Yogurt after it was discovered that certain batches may contain a type of yeast that poses a risk, particularly to people with weakened immune systems.

Details of the Affected Product

The affected yogurt, sold in 24-packs with 100-gram servings, could have been available for purchase between September 3 and September 19 at Costco locations across Canada. Notably, Danone Canada, the manufacturer of the yogurt, stated that 'the food safety risk is low, as this yeast is not known to grow in refrigerated temperatures.' Nonetheless, Danone urged consumers not to consume any product that has a 'best before' date of October 18, October 20, or October 22, advising them to dispose of it immediately.

Return Process for Consumers

Consumers can return any affected yogurt to Costco for a full refund. This cautionary measure emphasizes the retailer’s commitment to customer safety.

Earlier Recall Incident

Earlier this month, on September 10, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced a different recall involving the 24-pack of Kirkland Signature Greek Yogurt due to mold contamination. This earlier incident, classified as a Class 3 recall, indicated that while there was a low risk of causing 'undesirable health problems,' the potential for microbial contamination was significant enough for the CFIA to advise against using the product.

Both recalls have raised eyebrows amongst consumers, sparking concerns over food safety at one of Canada’s largest wholesale retailers. While the two incidents do not appear to be directly related, they highlight the increasing vigilance surrounding food product safety in the country.
