FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – A troubling outbreak has surfaced in Wonowon as Northern Health confirms multiple lab-confirmed cases of measles. The health authorities are raising alarms as the disease is now believed to be circulating within the community, originating from a travel-related case.
Residents and visitors may have been exposed to this highly contagious virus in various locations across Wonowon and surrounding areas, including Fort St. John, starting in late May. A potentially significant exposure took place at the emergency department waiting area of Fort St. John Hospital on June 2, between midnight and 4 a.m.
What You Should Know About Measles!
Measles is notoriously infectious, spreading quickly among those who haven’t been vaccinated or previously infected. While most Canadians carry some immunity thanks to vaccinations, those unprotected are at risk of experiencing symptoms within 7 to 21 days after exposure.

- Maintain proper hygiene: wash your hands regularly, and cover your coughs and sneezes.
- Refrain from sharing food, drinks, or cigarettes, and limit close interactions with others.
In case of severe symptoms, like difficulty breathing, high fever, confusion, or dehydration, contact your healthcare provider or the emergency department before arriving.
