A case of measles has been confirmed in Claresholm, and health officials are sounding the alarm! Alberta Health Services reported on July 9 that an infectious individual had been in public areas, raising concerns about potential exposure.
Possible Exposure Locations
If you were at the Lander Treatment Centre, located at 221 Fairway Drive, between June 30 and July 1 from 7:45 a.m. to 6 p.m., you might have come into contact with the virus.
Who Is at Risk?
Health authorities caution that those born in or after 1970 who have not received at least two doses of the measles vaccine may be particularly vulnerable. It's crucial to self-monitor for any symptoms and review vaccination records.
Symptoms to Watch For!
Measles is notoriously contagious, spreading through the air. Symptoms include:
• A fever of 100.9°F (38.3°C) or higher; • Cough, runny nose, and/or red eyes; • A distinctive rash that typically appears three to seven days after the fever begins, starting behind the ears and on the face before spreading downwards.
Serious Complications Ahead!
Measles can lead to severe complications such as ear infections, pneumonia, and even inflammation of the brain. Pregnant individuals, young children, and those with weakened immune systems are at the highest risk!
What to Do if You Think You’re Infected!
If you notice any symptoms, stay home and contact the measles hotline at 1-844-944-3434 before seeking medical attention. This is vital to ensure the safety of others.
Protect Yourself with Vaccination!
Fortunately, the measles vaccine is both highly effective and free through Alberta’s public immunization program. The recommended schedule includes two doses—one at one year of age and another at 18 months.
Immediate Vaccination for Possible Exposures!
If you think you’ve been exposed and are not fully immunized, getting vaccinated within 72 hours can significantly reduce your risk of infection. Special precautions are available for infants, pregnant women, and those with compromised immune systems.
