Measles Outbreak Warnings; Are You at Risk?

The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) has issued a dire warning about potential measles exposure in Rosthern. On July 9, during the early hours from 6:45 AM to 9:15 AM, the Rosthern Gas Plus became a hotspot for this highly contagious disease.

Know the Symptoms: Could You Be Infected?

If you were at the gas station during that timeframe and are unvaccinated or uncertain about your vaccination status, you must act quickly. Symptoms of measles include distinct white spots inside the mouth, fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, irritability, and fatigue. After these initial symptoms, a red, blotchy rash can appear on the face and spread across the body within three to seven days, lasting between four to seven days.

Take Action: What to Do If Exposed

The SHA strongly advises anyone who thinks they might have been exposed to keep a vigilant eye on their health for up to 21 days after exposure. Those at risk may qualify for preventive treatment within six days following exposure based on certain criteria: being unvaccinated, pregnant, under one year old, or immunocompromised.

Rising Numbers: The State of Measles in Saskatchewan

Since mid-March 2025, Saskatchewan has reported a staggering total of 60 measles cases. Most alarmingly, 22 of these cases occurred among children aged 5-17. Other affected age groups include 17 cases in adults aged 18-54, 16 cases in toddlers aged 1-4, three cases under one year old, and two cases in the over-54 bracket. Shockingly, a whopping 86.7% of the patients were unvaccinated.

Understanding Measles: A Highly Contagious Virus

Measles is not just a minor illness; it's highly contagious and can be transmitted easily through the air. The virus can linger for up to two hours in a space where an infected person coughed or sneezed. Infected individuals are contagious from four days before the rash appears until four days after it develops. Therefore, maintaining strict isolation during this time is critical to prevent the spread of the virus.

Prevention is Key: How to Stay Safe

The best defense against this viral outbreak is vaccination. Ensure your immunizations are up to date to protect yourself and your community!
