Health Warning Issued for Local Shoppers
The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) has raised alarms about potential measles exposure for shoppers at two busy Harbour Landing stores in Regina earlier this month.
Were You at These Locations?
If you visited Walmart Superstore (4500 Gordon Road) on April 9 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. or Bass Pro Shop (910 Gordon Road) from 3:15 to 5:30 p.m., it's crucial that you monitor for symptoms for up to 21 days following your visit.
What You Need to Know About Measles
Measles is infamously contagious, able to linger in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves. It can also spread via contaminated surfaces, so vigilance is key!
Symptoms include a high fever, coughing, runny nose, red eyes, fatigue, irritability, and distinctive white spots in the mouth. A characteristic red, blotchy rash typically appears around three to seven days after the onset of symptoms, spreading across the body.
Immediate Action Required!
If you experience any of these symptoms and were present at the identified locations during the specified times, contact HealthLine 811 or reach out to your healthcare provider for guidance.
Preventative Measures Available!
The SHA has advised that those exposed could be eligible for medical prophylaxis within six days of exposure. Don't wait—act now!
Current Measles Situation in Saskatchewan
As of April 10, six measles cases have been confirmed across Saskatchewan this year. The good news? The MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, rubella) is highly effective in preventing infection. The SHA strongly recommends that everyone verify they have received two doses.
Vaccination Rates: Are You Covered?
In Saskatchewan, the vaccination rates are as follows: - 75.9% of children receive both doses before their second birthday. - 87.3% are vaccinated by age seven.
Here’s a brief breakdown of vaccination rates by region: - Far North: 57.4% by second birthday - North Central West: 66.6% by second birthday - Regina: 82.1% by second birthday - Saskatoon: 81.3% by second birthday
