In a concerning new development, Alberta Health Services (AHS) is sounding the alarm regarding a recent measles case in southern Alberta. Are you at risk? If you were born in or after 1970 and haven’t received two doses of the measles vaccine, you need to pay close attention!

Measles is notoriously contagious and can spread rapidly through the air. It's crucial for anyone unvaccinated or unsure of their vaccination status to carefully monitor for symptoms.

Recognizing the Symptoms: What to Look For!

Key symptoms of measles include: - A fever of 38.3°C (101°F) or higher - Persistent cough - Runny nose and/or red eyes - A distinctive rash that typically emerges three to seven days after the fever, starting behind the ears and face before spreading across the body.

On lighter skin, the rash is red and blotchy, while on darker skin, it might appear purple and can be harder to spot.

Serious Risks: Don’t Take Measles Lightly!

Complications from measles can be severe, leading to ear infections, pneumonia, brain inflammation, and even premature delivery in pregnant women. The most vulnerable individuals include pregnant women, infants under one year, and those with compromised immune systems.

What to Do If You Think You Are Infected!

If you exhibit symptoms of measles, it’s imperative to stay home and contact Health Link at 811 before heading to any healthcare facility. This precaution helps prevent further spread of the disease.

Get Vaccinated: Protect Yourself and Others!

The measles vaccine is incredibly effective and is offered for free through Alberta’s public immunization program. The recommended vaccination schedule includes two doses: the first at one year of age and the second at 18 months.

Had recent exposure? If you receive the vaccine within 72 hours, it can prevent infection! Additionally, immune globulin may help those at high risk within a six-day window.
