Measles Alert: Protect Yourself!

Health officials are ringing alarm bells in Lethbridge as more measles cases have been confirmed. If you were born in or after 1970 and haven’t received at least two doses of the measles vaccine, you might be at risk!

Know the Symptoms!

Measles is highly contagious and can spread rapidly! Symptoms to watch for include: - **High Fever**: At least 38.3°C (101°F) - **Cough, Runny Nose, or Red Eyes** - **Rash**: Typically appears 3 to 7 days after the fever starts, beginning behind the ears and on the face before spreading to the body and limbs.

The Risks Are Real!

Complications from measles can be severe, including ear infections, pneumonia, and even brain inflammation. Pregnant women, young children, and those with weakened immune systems face the highest risk. If you develop symptoms, stay home and call the measles hotline at 1-844-944-3434 before seeking medical care.

Vaccination Saves Lives!

The measles vaccine is your best defense! In Alberta, it's offered for free. The recommended schedule includes: - **First Dose**: At 1 year old - **Second Dose**: At 18 months. Given the current outbreak, additional vaccinations are now suggested for: - **Infants aged 6 to 11 months**: They should receive an early dose, with routine doses following after 1 year.

What If You’ve Been Exposed?

If you've potentially been exposed to measles and aren’t vaccinated, receiving a dose of the vaccine within 72 hours can help prevent infection. For infants under 1 year or those with severely compromised immune systems, contact your healthcare provider about immunoglobulin treatment within 6 days of exposure.
