Staggering Statistics Reveal the Scale of the Outbreak

Between October 18, 2024, and April 9, 2025, a staggering 816 cases of measles were reported across 15 public health units. Out of these, 678 were confirmed, and 138 were deemed probable. The vast majority of these infections are clustered in western and southwestern Ontario, with troubling outbreaks also spotted in the southeast, near north, and Niagara regions.

New Cases on the Rise—Who is Affected?

In just one week (April 3 to April 10), Ontario saw 155 new cases of measles. Alarmingly, about 92.5% of those infected were children and teens, while 62% of infected adults were unvaccinated. These figures underscore a critical gap in immunization.

Dr. Dick Zoutman, an infectious disease specialist, warns that Ontario's immunization rate of just 70% is dangerously low compared to the 91% to 93% rates seen in many European nations. He emphasizes, 'This is a public health failure that must be addressed with the utmost urgency.'
