On April 3, 2025, Northrop Grumman made a monumental delivery by handing over the Habitation and Logistics Outpost (HALO) to NASA for its groundbreaking Gateway lunar orbit platform. This critical module is now set to undergo final tests before it journeys to Florida for its launch!

What Exactly is HALO?

As part of NASA's ambitious Artemis program, the Gateway will serve as a human-tended, compact space station orbiting the moon. HALO will be one of the first key components to launch, providing astronauts with a living and working space where they can conduct vital scientific research until more international modules join the station.

What Makes HALO Stand Out?

Designed by Thales Alenia Space, HALO is equipped with state-of-the-art command and control capabilities, energy storage, power distribution, thermal management, and communication systems. With three docking ports, it will accommodate visiting vehicles and future additions, allowing up to four Artemis astronauts to stay aboard for extended missions—up to a month—while they explore the moon's South Pole.

Where is HALO Now?

Currently, HALO resides at Northrop Grumman’s facility in Gilbert, Arizona, after its journey from Turin, Italy, where its primary structure was crafted. It will soon complete its final outfitting before heading to NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, where it will be integrated with the Power and Propulsion Element and prepare for its monumental journey to the moon.
