Groundbreaking Trial to Tackle Stress with Oxytocin and Mindfulness
A game-changing study is on the horizon, aimed at exploring how the combination of oxytocin and mindfulness training can help adults struggling with stress. This innovative trial will pit a combo therapy against standalone treatments, offering fresh insights into managing stress effectively.
The Study Design: What's Happening?
In this ambitious randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 120 adults will be divided into four groups. Each will receive different combinations of treatments: 1) Oxytocin plus mindfulness training; 2) Mindfulness alone with a placebo; 3) Oxytocin alone; and 4) Just a placebo. This study promises to measure the impact of these therapies on various stress markers over a total of three assessments—before, immediately after, and six weeks post-intervention.
Who Can Join This Exciting Research?
Participants are being recruited from mental health facilities in Belgium, including the esteemed KU Leuven. They must be Dutch-speaking adults aged 18 to 50, exhibiting mild to severe stress symptoms. However, individuals currently undergoing psychological treatment or those with significant experience in meditation practices will be excluded to maintain the study's integrity.
Understanding the Scientific Basis: How Will They Measure Outcomes?
Outcomes will be rigorously assessed using a variety of psychological and physiological measures. This includes self-reported feelings of stress, emotional distress levels, and in-depth neurophysiological recordings to observe how participants respond to stress before and after the interventions.
