Get ready, Metro Vancouver! A dazzling meteor shower is lighting up our night skies, with the spectacular Eta Aquariids set to reach its peak in early May.
Catch the Celestial Marvel!
This stunning celestial event, running from April 15 to May 27, offers plenty of chances to witness shooting stars. However, don’t get too excited just yet—most of the action happens in the early morning hours when most locals are still snoozing.
According to H.R. MacMillan Space Centre's astronomer Rosanna Tilbrook, the best time to catch a glimpse of these meteors is after 3 a.m., when the constellation Aquarius finally rises above the horizon.
Mark Your Calendars for May 5!
The grand showcase is set for the night of May 4 into the dawn on May 5. Just a heads-up: the first quarter moon may cast a bit of light, but don’t let that discourage you!
A Mild Shower Awaits!
While the Eta Aquariids are a treat, don’t expect an overwhelming number of meteors. Due to their low position in the sky, observers in Metro Vancouver can typically catch only around 14 meteors per hour—a relatively mild show.
Maximize Your Meteor Viewing Experience!
If the weather cooperates and the skies are clear, you can enhance your viewing experience. Tilbrook suggests finding a dark location away from city lights for the best sight. A clear view towards the eastern horizon is optimal, as this is where the meteors will emerge.
Before heading out, don’t forget to check the Vancouver Clear Sky Chart to gauge the ideal viewing conditions.
A Cosmic Origin!
Remember, these meteors hail from the famous Halley's Comet, which graces Earth with its presence approximately every 76 years. So, grab a blanket, set your alarm, and don't miss out on this celestial event! The stars are waiting for you!
