SASKATOON -

The University Bridge will remain closed until at least Wednesday as the City of Saskatoon conducts necessary inspections following extensive fire damage on Sunday night. The fire, which erupted just before 10 p.m., originated from what appeared to be an encampment near Spadina Crescent and 25th Street East, prompting city officials to take immediate action to prevent a potential environmental disaster.

In response to the emergency, a temporary bypass line measuring 500 meters has been implemented to manage raw sewage overflow and prevent it from contaminating the South Saskatchewan River. The City’s Water and Waste Operations Department is working diligently to repair the damaged sewer line while ensuring that public safety remains a top priority.

Firefighters faced tough conditions, including extreme cold, when they arrived at the scene to combat the flames. Fortunately, they managed to extinguish the fire quickly, and an investigation confirmed that there were no injuries reported in connection with the incident. "Crews extended a hose line to apply water to the difficult-to-reach fire,” the Saskatoon Fire Department stated, acknowledging that the situation was compounded by severe winter weather that hindered operational timelines.

Brendan Lemke, the Director of Water and Waste Operations for the City of Saskatoon, emphasized the challenges posed by the cold when it comes to repair work. “The extreme temperatures have undoubtedly slowed down our operations,” he explained. “We must ensure that the repairs are carried out meticulously, especially given the intricate nature of the materials involved.”

Once the bridge reopens, traffic restrictions will remain in place as further repairs are executed. Commuters are advised to re-route their travel plans accordingly, as various detours will impact Saskatoon Transit services as well. Pedestrian access will be limited, with the Meewasin Trail beneath the east side of the bridge also closed for safety measures.

This incident mirrors a similar occurrence last October, when firefighters quelled another fire under the bridge linked to an encampment. In that case, law enforcement arrested an individual and charged them with mischief under $5,000.

With environmental implications and community safety at the forefront, officials continue to monitor the situation closely, keeping downstream communities and the Water Security Agency informed about any potential risks. Residents of Saskatoon are encouraged to stay updated on the situation and adhere to all city advisories as the repairs unfold.

Stay tuned for further developments as the city navigates these pressing issues and works towards restoring normalcy in the area!
