In a dramatic turn of events, a 30-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly abducting his own eight-month-old nephew, spurring a swift Amber Alert response in Brampton on Thursday evening.
Authorities reported that the infant was in a vehicle with his mother, parked at a plaza near Main Street South and Charolais Boulevard. As the mother stepped out of the car, her brother—who was with them—seized the moment, jumped into the driver’s seat, and drove off without permission.
Peel police were immediately alerted, prompting them to call in the Ontario Provincial Police, which issued the Amber Alert at 6:04 p.m.
Remarkably, just 20 minutes later, the baby was located unharmed in an abandoned parking lot close to Resolution Drive and Rutherford Road, leading to the cancellation of the Amber Alert.
The saga didn't end there; the suspect, identified as Shazaib Memon, was still active and spotted driving in the area. During a tense chase, he allegedly rammed a police cruiser in an attempt to flee. Due to the reckless nature of his driving, officials decided to halt the pursuit for safety reasons.
Hours later, Memon was apprehended at approximately 2:19 a.m. and hit with multiple charges: abduction of a person under 14, taking a vehicle without consent, abandoning a child, dangerously operating a vehicle, fleeing from law enforcement, and possession of stolen property.
Peel police Chief Nishan Duraiappah praised the swift action of his team, stating, "The safe recovery of this child showcases the collaboration between our investigators and patrol officers in critical moments. In under 20 minutes, an abducted child was found safe, and the suspect responsible was later taken into custody." He further warned, "To anyone who seeks to cause harm in Peel, know this: we will find you, and we will hold you fully accountable."
