In a surprising turn of events, former U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that Russian President Vladimir Putin is dodging meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky simply because he harbors a dislike for him. This revelation was made during a press briefing on August 25.
Despite engaging both leaders in separate discussions this month while attempting to facilitate peace talks, Trump lamented the lack of progress, noting that Russian attacks continue to rain down on Ukrainian cities.
"Every conversation I have with him [Putin] is constructive," Trump told reporters from the Oval Office. "But then I hear about bombs dropping in Kyiv and it makes me furious. I believe peace is achievable, but war often brings unexpected challenges."
Adding to the drama, during his speech, Trump displayed a confusing stance on the potential for an end to the war, indicating he aims to arrange a meeting between the two leaders yet adding that such an event might be unlikely.
"They really despise each other," Trump pointed out. "I originally thought mending ties between Russia and Ukraine would be straightforward, but it seems there are major personality clashes at play."
Trump's recent meetings included one with Zelensky at the White House on August 18, shortly after his encounter with Putin in Alaska. Following their discussions, Zelensky reaffirmed Ukraine's openness to unconditional negotiations with Russia.
Zelensky emphasized that any peace talks must address serious issues, including Russia's illegal abduction of Ukrainian children, the restoration of occupied territories, and necessary funding to bolster Ukraine's defense.
Moreover, he announced that over 30 countries, including several European nations, Canada, and Japan, are prepared to provide security guarantees for Ukraine, with some even considering contributions of peacekeeping forces, intelligence, and air defense assistance.
Trump voiced U.S. support as a strategic backup, highlighting that European allies would play a crucial role in delivering robust security assurances.
"We're committed to helping them," Trump stated firmly. "It's heartbreaking to witness the loss of life."
Earlier, on August 19, Trump clarified that there would be no American troops stationed in Ukraine to uphold security agreements, stressing that European forces would take the lead.
Zelensky, showcasing unwavering determination, reiterated his readiness for discussions with Putin. On August 20, he commented that if the Russian leader is unwilling to meet face-to-face, Kyiv anticipates a more forceful response from the United States.
