In a late-night post that stirred controversy, Donald Trump took to Truth Social to assert that he had fired Erik Siebert, his chosen U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. However, it was revealed that Siebert had actually resigned just hours earlier.
"He didn’t quit, I fired him!" Trump declared triumphantly at 12:14 AM, as speculation surrounding the attorney's departure swirled.
The backdrop to this drama involves a months-long investigation into New York Attorney General Letitia James, which Siebert had been tasked to probe. In April, the former president's administration had urged Siebert to look into whether James was fraudulently claiming her Virginia home as her primary residence to secure better loan terms.
But despite the intense scrutiny, investigators concluded there was insufficient evidence to file charges against James. On Wednesday, ABC News alerted the public that Trump was likely to fire Siebert over the handling of the case.
Interestingly, just four and a half hours before Trump's bold proclamation, ABC reported that Siebert had sent out a resignation email to his staff, with no mention of the high-profile investigation.
Adding another layer to the story, Trump had expressed doubts about Siebert earlier that day. During a photo op in the Oval Office, he claimed he wasn't closely monitoring the case but hinted at a lack of trust in Siebert, primarily because the attorney had received support from Virginia’s Democratic Senators, Tim Kaine and Mark Warner.
"They voted for this guy, and I have other people, judges, and U.S. Attorneys from other states who have faced similar situations and have been blocked from being approved,"> Trump explained to ABC's Jonathan Karl.
Ultimately, Trump had nominated Siebert just months earlier, in May. The unfolding saga raises questions about Trump's decision-making and communication amid the political turmoil surrounding his administration.
