In a shocking turn of events on Tuesday, a 36-year-old man lost his life after being shot by police in west Edmonton. The incident unfolded after reports surfaced that he had entered a residential yard and threatened a homeowner with a gun.

At approximately 12:46 p.m., officers responded to a call near 97 Avenue and 163 Street, quickly locating a suspect matching the gunman's description. This man had already fled the scene on foot after pointing his weapon at the resident.

The confrontation escalated when police encountered him in an alley near 98 Avenue and 156 Street, leading to an officer discharging their weapon. Immediate first-aid efforts were initiated on-site prior to the arrival of Emergency Medical Services, who transported the man to a hospital, where he was unfortunately pronounced dead.

As investigators examined the scene, they discovered what appeared to be the firearm involved in the incident still on the ground, raising questions about the events that transpired.

Fortunately, no one else was harmed during this alarming episode. In response to the shooting, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been assigned to investigate the case under the oversight of the Director of Law Enforcement.
