A man’s tragic death on the Hanlon Expressway has sent shockwaves through the community, as it appears to be connected to a police investigation unfolding on Fife Road later that evening.
Around 6 p.m. Wednesday, Ontario Provincial Police responded to a horrifying two-vehicle crash on the Hanlon Expressway near Stone Road. Initial reports suggested a pedestrian was involved, but it was later confirmed that one individual sustained serious injuries and was tragically pronounced dead at the hospital.
By Friday morning, OPP revealed they were in pursuit of the drivers of the vehicles involved, who had shockingly fled the scene prior to police arrival, turning the fatal incident into a race against time for investigators. The two vehicles were described as a grey Toyota Venza and a white RAM pickup truck.
Eye-opening video footage obtained shows that just before the crash, both vehicles were parked near a co-op housing unit on Fife Road. Witnesses reported a disturbance at that location, where it was claimed that someone was forcibly shoved into a car, raising alarm among the residents.
At approximately 4:52 p.m., the footage captures the white RAM pickup truck entering the now cordoned-off parking area. Multiple men exited the vehicle, with one remarkably appearing to be lying in the truck’s bed. Subsequently, the pickup truck departed, giving way to the grey Toyota Venza just before the fatal incident.
Residents recalled hearing significant commotion, including shouts for help, but by the time they ventured outside, the suspects had vanished. The Venza left the scene at around 5:55 p.m., just minutes before the tragic collision occurred on the Hanlon.
Although the Hanlon Expressway falls under OPP jurisdiction, the Fife Road complex does not. Guelph Police have since set up a presence at the scene, stating they are assisting OPP with the ongoing investigation.
While local residents reported police had communicated a connection between the two incidents, authorities have yet to provide an official statement. OPP media relations officer Cst. Matthew Burton emphasized that the investigation is still in its infancy, with information constantly being gathered. He assured that updates will be provided in upcoming releases.
As this complex story unfolds, both the community and investigators are left with more questions than answers. Stay tuned for further developments in this tragic case.
