In a chilling development, authorities in Washington state believe they have located the remains of Travis Decker, the father accused of murdering his three young daughters.
The Chelan County Sheriff’s Office announced on Thursday that it is currently examining human remains found in a remote wooded area south of Leavenworth, aided by the Washington State Patrol crime scene response team. While positive identification is pending, preliminary assessments indicate that the remains may belong to Decker.
The search operation was spearheaded by the U.S. Marshals Service's Pacific Northwest Violent Offender Task Force, enlisting the help of multiple agencies including the U.S. Border Patrol, Forest Service, and the FBI.
This grim saga began on June 2 when Decker failed to return his daughters—nine-year-old Paityn, eight-year-old Evelyn, and five-year-old Olivia—after a scheduled visit. Their bodies were discovered in a campground, tragically bound and concealed.
Arianna Cozart, the attorney representing Whitney Decker, Travis’s ex-wife and the girls' mother, expressed her hope for confirmation of the remains. "We continue to be grateful for law enforcement’s efforts in this case and appreciate the outpouring of love and support for Whitney during this heart-wrenching time,” she told ABC News.
As the investigation unfolds, police have stressed the importance of privacy for the grieving family. Decker, a former U.S. Army member, had been evading capture since the grisly discovery of his daughters, prompting authorities to close in on him shortly thereafter.
Reports revealed that prior to the incident, Decker had been searching online for information regarding relocating to Canada, raising concerns about his intentions or potential escape plans. The remains were found suspiciously near the Canadian border, only 11 miles from the well-known Pacific Crest Trail.
Facing severe charges including three counts of first-degree murder and kidnapping, Decker’s case has captured widespread attention, highlighting the dark complexities of this tragic family matter.
As the community grapples with this heartbreaking loss, the investigation remains ongoing, with law enforcement firmly dedicated to bringing justice for the young victims.
