Routine Flight Training Turns Catastrophic
A routine flight training turned catastrophic on Saturday afternoon, claiming the lives of two individuals in a tragic plane crash near Chilliwack Lake. The incident unfolded around 2:13 p.m. when a Cessna 172, operated by Abbotsford-based Chinook Helicopters, vanished from flight tracking systems before crashing approximately 8 kilometers southeast of the scenic lake.
Victims Confirmed by Authorities
According to the Maritime Forces Pacific Public Affairs Office (MARPAC), the ill-fated aircraft was carrying both a flight instructor and a student pilot, both of whom perished in the incident. The local Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) reported that an automated crash notification issued from an iPhone prompted a quick response from emergency services.
Emergency Response
In a race against time, the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) Victoria dispatched a CH-149 Cormorant helicopter from Comox and a fixed-wing aircraft from the Civil Air Search and Rescue Association (CASARA) based out of Pitt Meadows. Ground Search and Rescue, also engaged by the RCMP, joined the aerial efforts. It was CASARA that ultimately located the wreckage, after which the RCMP took control of the scene.
Investigation Underway
As investigators work tirelessly, the Chilliwack RCMP has confirmed that both victims have unfortunately succumbed to their injuries. The investigation now involves the Transportation Safety Board and the British Columbia Coroners Service as they strive to uncover the factors leading to this devastating crash.
Concerns About Aviation Safety
This tragic event raises concerns about aviation safety in the region and underscores the risks involved in flight training operations. With a growing interest in aviation and flight schools proliferating across Canada, calls for stringent safety regulations and training protocols are likely to follow this incident.
