Desperate Search After Student Swept Away

KAMLOOPS — A frantic search is underway for a missing Thompson Rivers University student, who was swept away by the powerful currents of the Thompson River on the evening of July 6. The incident occurred around 5:00 PM while the student was playing volleyball with friends at Overlander Park.

Heroic Attempts to Save

Witnesses reported that the student was trying to retrieve a volleyball that had fallen into the river when he was caught in the undercurrent. Two other men, who jumped in to help, were also pulled into the fierce waters. Fortunately, they were rescued, but the missing student vanished beneath the surface.

According to Kamloops Search and Rescue (KSAR) President Paula Davies, search teams are now scouring the river from where the student went missing, extending south toward the airport and beyond the Overlanders Bridge. The search efforts resumed early Monday morning after being paused overnight.

In a bid to locate the missing student, KSAR is employing a range of resources, including a power boat and sonar device called AquaEye, contributed by Vernon Search and Rescue. Drones are also being utilized to assist in the search, which has become a major operation focusing on public safety.
