In a thrilling display of determination and family spirit, Toronto firefighter Brendan Neely has shattered the Guinness World Record for the fastest time running one kilometer while pushing a stroller. The idea struck him during a run last year, while he was pushing his two sons along.
"I thought, 'Maybe there's a record for this,'" Neely shared just before his record attempt on Thursday at Downsview Park.
Neely, an experienced runner and obstacle course racer, faced strict guidelines laid out by Guinness World Records. He was required to push a living passenger—his son Jack—who was securely fastened in a Baby Jogger stroller, which the company graciously sponsored for the event.
Neely had to maintain constant contact with the stroller and could not rely on it for support. The stakes were high as he prepared to topple the previous record of three minutes and nineteen seconds set by a runner from the UK.
With cheers from family and friends, Neely took off, and against all odds, he completed the distance in a jaw-dropping two minutes and fifty-one seconds, claiming his place in the record books.
"That was unreal!" Neely exclaimed after crossing the finish line. "Everything went smoother than I imagined, and Jack was just having a blast in the stroller!"
But this achievement means more than just a title. Neely expressed that the bond he has formed with his sons through countless hours of training is what he cherishes the most.
What's next for this inspiring dad? Neely is gearing up for a race in Saudi Arabia and is even considering going for another stroller record—this time with both of his sons in tow!
"It’s a wild ride for sure, and this is just the beginning!" he said, showcasing his enthusiasm for both running and fatherhood.
