Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow has described the residents of Lawrence Heights as "traumatized" following a tragic shooting that claimed one life and injured five others just two days prior. The Harrowing Incident

The horrific event unfolded on a Tuesday night at the intersection of Ranee Avenue and Varna Drive, near Yorkdale Mall. Police reported that armed suspects opened fire on a group of people, resulting in the death of a 31-year-old man in a wheelchair, who suffered life-threatening injuries. Disturbingly, this victim had previously been left paralyzed from an unrelated shooting back in 2018.

Youth in Peril: Shootings Continue

Among the five additional victims, aged 17 to 30, one was an employee at the Lawrence Heights Community Centre, who was hit by a bullet while on duty. Thankfully, these injuries were classified as non-life-threatening. Authorities have indicated that the shooting was targeted and are actively searching for three male suspects, described as wearing dark clothing and face coverings.

Calls for Justice Reform Grow Louder

In a powerful statement, Eglinton-Lawrence Coun. Mike Colle has called upon federal and provincial leaders for urgent bail reform, citing the failures of the existing justice system. "If we continue allowing the same people back on the streets, this situation will worsen," Colle warned, explaining the community's frustration over dangerous individuals re-entering their neighborhoods after serious charges.

Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw affirmed the ongoing investigation is "very active," emphasizing a commitment to combat gun violence throughout the city.
