Tick-Tock! Your Last Chance to Use TTC Tokens and Tickets Is Here!

The clock is ticking for transit users in Toronto! If you still have TTC tokens, tickets, or day passes stashed away, you better use them soon—June 1 is the deadline!

After this date, the TTC will officially retire these legacy fare options, moving towards a sleeker, more modern payment system that embraces PRESTO cards, debit and credit cards, and even Apple Pay.

Originally, the cutoff was set for December 31, 2024, but during a recent TTC board meeting, officials decided to accelerate the timeline, offering no refunds or exchanges once the change takes place.

Interestingly, the transit agency revealed that the use of tokens, tickets, and passes has plummeted to a strikingly low rate—less than one percent of riders are still paying with these older methods. The switch to digital payment systems is part of the TTC's broader strategy to modernize fare payment and combat revenue loss due to fare evasion.

TTC tokens have been a staple of Toronto's transit landscape since 1954, but they were last sold at stations in 2019, marking the beginning of their slow goodbye.

Don't worry; you can still hop on the TTC using cash at fare boxes located in stations, on buses, and streetcars—at least for now!
