Threads Takes a Giant Leap into the Fediverse!

In a bold move to outshine its competitor X, Instagram's Threads has just rolled out two groundbreaking features aimed at enhancing its integration with the open social web, known as the fediverse. Now, Threads users can peek into a rich tapestry of posts from other federated users within a dedicated feed, provided they opt into fediverse sharing.

Discover Content Like Never Before!

Say goodbye to isolation! With the new update, users can seamlessly access posts from popular federated platforms like Mastodon, BookWyrm, and WriteFreely—just to name a few. These posts can be found on the Following tab, but here’s the catch: they’re housed in a separate feed. Users will only need to click a convenient link at the top to explore this treasure trove of diverse content.

Engagement Just Got Better!

While Threads is still ironing out all the features, including direct replies to fediverse posts, users can already see replies to their Threads posts from users on other platforms. It's a glimpse into a broader conversation unfolding across various social media landscapes.

Search & Connect with Fediverse Profiles!

But that’s not all! Threads now enables users to easily search for and discover fediverse profiles directly within the app. This includes bloggers on WordPress, users of Flipboard, and those from the Mastodon community—opening up a world where connections are more fluid and less confined.

The Numbers Behind the Magic!

With over 350 million monthly active users, Threads stands as the largest application operating on the ActivityPub protocol, the same backbone that powers popular platforms like Mastodon. This makes it a key player in the vast ecosystem of interconnected social media servers that make up the decentralized open web.

A Journey Since Launch!

Since its inception in July 2023, Threads has taken cues from both traditional and open-source social networks. Alongside Trailblazers like Bluesky and Mastodon, it’s designed features that allow customization and easy discovery, giving users tools to forge connections like never before.

Global Reach and Future Potential!

Just last June, Threads expanded its fediverse capabilities to the EU, following successful launches in the U.S., Canada, and Japan. Meta proudly announced that since activating fediverse sharing a year ago, Threads has interacted with over 75% of all fediverse servers—a testament to its growing influence in this decentralized arena.
