Vigilante Justice Comes to an End
Robyn McCall's powerful reign as a vigilante is officially over! CBS has confirmed that after five thrilling seasons, *The Equalizer* has been cancelled, with this Sunday’s season finale (10/9c) now also designated as the series finale.
Why Was *The Equalizer* Axed?
The decision comes on the heels of CBS opting not to move forward with a spinoff featuring Titus Welliver. While *The Equalizer* has entertained millions, it struggled to maintain viewership, averaging just 6.1 million total viewers this season—down 25% from its fourth season. Among the 14 dramas aired by CBS this year, it ranked a disappointing 12th, only surpassing the struggling *NCIS: Sydney* and the already cancelled *S.W.A.T*.
Adding to the show's challenges was its season 5 time slot, which began awkwardly late. With the debut of *Tracker* following the widely popular *60 Minutes*, *The Equalizer* saw its premiere time pushed back even further midseason.
A Reimagining with Heart
Premiering in 2021, *The Equalizer* offered a fresh take on the classic Edward Woodward procedural. Queen Latifah stole hearts as Robyn McCall, an enigmatic figure and former CIA operative who helps those in dire need. Juggling the dual life of a single mother and a covert guardian angel, she displayed a relentless drive for justice and personal atonement.
The Star-Studded Cast
Joining Latifah in this captivating narrative were Tory Kittles as Detective Marcus Dante, Adam Goldberg as tech whiz Harry Keshegian, Liza Lapira as the resourceful bar owner and sniper Melody "Mel" Bayani, Laya DeLeon Hayes as Robyn's daughter Delilah, and Lorraine Toussaint as her wise aunt, Viola "Vi" Marsette.
What Does the Future Hold for CBS?
*The Equalizer* is not the only show facing cancellation at CBS this season; it joins the ranks of *FBI: Most Wanted*, *FBI: International*, *S.W.A.T.*, and new comedies like *Poppa’s House* on the chopping block. However, CBS is looking ahead, having greenlit exciting new projects like a *Blue Bloods* spinoff titled *Boston Blue*, and a CIA drama starring Tom Ellis from *Lucifer*, as well as the Harriet Dyer comedy *DMV*. Stay tuned for CBS's full fall lineup announcement next Wednesday, May 7!
