In a dramatic show of military might, China's forces shadowed Australian and Canadian warships navigating the contentious waters of the Taiwan Strait, deeming their presence a provocative act.

The People’s Liberation Army's Eastern Theatre Command denounced the actions of the Australian guided-missile destroyer Brisbane and the Canadian frigate Ville de Quebec as ‘trouble-making’ and a source of heightened security risks.

A military spokesperson expressed concern, stating, 'The actions of the Canadians and Australians send the wrong signals and increase security risks'.

In response, a Canadian armed forces representative declined to comment on the operational plans of the deployed ships but noted that the Ville de Quebec is part of Operation Horizon, which aims to uphold peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific.

Earlier this week, the Ville de Quebec was active in the Philippine economic zone, engaging in freedom of navigation exercises, as confirmed by a statement from the Canadian government.

While there was no prompt reply from the Australian military regarding the incident, Taiwan's defense ministry assured that it closely monitors the strait’s activities, asserting that it deploys suitable air and naval forces to maintain security and stability in this vital waterway.

The Taiwan Strait, a critical maritime route separating China from the self-governing island of Taiwan, is frequently traversed by the US Navy and allied nations, including monthly operations by Canada, Britain, and France, who regard it as an international waterway.

China, however, claims the strait as part of its territorial waters, viewing Taiwan as a renegade province. This year alone, China has ramped up its military pressure on Taiwan, conducting extensive war games in close proximity to the island.

As tensions mount, the situation in the Taiwan Strait remains precarious, with the potential for further conflict looming as global powers assert their presence in this strategically significant region.
