Taylor Swift Fan Left in the Lurch as VRBO Booking Falls Through!
A Taylor Swift fan’s dream of attending the pop icon’s much-anticipated concert in Vancouver has turned into a frustrating ordeal, as her booked short-term rental vanished just weeks before the show. Melissa LaFontaine, a Vancouver Island resident, planned a memorable trip with her daughter, sister, and friend to catch Swift's performance on December 6. After booking a rental home through VRBO back in December 2023, LaFontaine thought she had secured a place to rest after the exciting night.
With hotel options scarce during the three-night stop of Swift's Eras Tour, LaFontaine opted for a VRBO home located in the desirable Point Grey neighborhood, paying a hefty $879 in advance for one night. The initial confirmation seemed promising when the host sent a message thanking her for the booking, but it was far from the happy ending she envisioned.
Fast forward seven months, and when LaFontaine reached out again, the host shockingly requested that she cancel her reservation. “Hi Melissa, we are not ready to take Dec reservation yet,” the message read, raising LaFontaine’s suspicions that the host had realized the potential for higher earnings with Swift’s concert looming.
Despite her concern about losing the booking and facing steep alternative prices—some listings were priced at over $1,500—LaFontaine refused to back down, following advice from a VRBO representative. However, as mid-October rolled around, she noticed her reservation had mysteriously disappeared from her account. Another attempt to contact the host yielded the dreaded message: “It is not available.”
The customer service response from VRBO left much to be desired, offering only a $50 credit and a list of pricier alternatives. By the time VRBO reached out with assurances that the host was still willing to honor the reservation, LaFontaine had already booked another accommodation—at more than double what she originally paid.
With the host maintaining the right to cancel, even if she claimed to be willing to keep the reservation, LaFontaine voiced her mistrust. “If the host does cancel, they’ll send us another list of alternative accommodations,” she said, highlighting the uncertainty looming over her plans.
In a statement to CTV News, VRBO emphasized its commitment to addressing cancellations with a policy that penalizes hosts who cancel last-minute, including fees that increase as check-in dates approach. However, LaFontaine's experience has prompted her to swear off VRBO for good. “I will never use VRBO again, for sure,” she asserted.
This unfortunate incident has raised concerns about the reliability of short-term rental platforms, especially during high-demand events like concerts. Is this a sign that fans should consider alternative accommodations to avoid such stress? Meanwhile, Swifties everywhere hope the pop star's concert experience isn't marred by rental drama—because nothing should come between fandom and music!
