Astronomers Unveil Unexpected Origin of Asteroid 2024 YR4

In a groundbreaking revelation, astronomers at the W. M. Keck Observatory in Hawaii have traced the origins of the newly discovered asteroid, 2024 YR4, to a surprising source. Initially spotted in December 2024, this rare Earth-crossing asteroid has origins rooted in the Main Belt between Mars and Jupiter—a region thought to be devoid of such celestial wanderers.

Lead researcher Bryce Bolin explains, "YR4 has a unique spinning behavior, rotating once every 20 minutes in a retrograde direction. Its flattened, irregular shape suggests a solid stone structure, which is pivotal for understanding how we might deflect it if deemed dangerous in the future."

Potential Risks and Research Opportunities

Initially, projections raised alarms about a possible Earth impact in 2032, but further analysis has alleviated those concerns. However, an estimated 2% chance of a collision with the Moon remains, making it a significant object of study.

Measuring around 50-60 meters in diameter—similar in size to a football field—YR4 stands as one of the most substantial threats in recent history that could strike the Moon. Bolin notes, "If it does collide with the Moon, it will provide a rare opportunity for scientists to observe how an asteroid's size correlates with the crater it creates, an aspect previously unmeasured."
