Anaphylaxis Alerts: Summertime Safety Protocols
Attention, summer adventurers! As picnics, barbecues, and outdoor activities ramp up, so do the risks of anaphylaxis— a severe and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction. BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) has reported a concerning increase in emergency calls linked to anaphylactic incidents over the summer months. To combat this, they’re stepping up public education efforts.
BCEHS Unveils Essential Video Tutorial
This week, BCEHS launched an informative video titled "How to Recognize Anaphylaxis and Use an Epi-Pen." This essential guide teaches viewers how to identify the critical signs of anaphylaxis and act quickly in emergencies.
An Alarming Increase in Cases
In June alone, BCEHS paramedics responded to 145 calls related to anaphylaxis, highlighting the seasonal uptick in allergy-related emergencies. According to BCEHS Public Information Officer Brian Twaites, "The surge in calls during summer is partly due to increased insect stings during outdoor activities and the heightened risk of food allergen exposure at events like barbecues."
Recognizing the Symptoms Is Key
Anaphylaxis can manifest quickly and requires swift action. Symptoms include severe skin rashes, swollen lips and eyes, swelling in the throat and tongue, difficulty breathing, wheezing, and intense nausea or vomiting, as outlined in BCEHS's video.
Immediate Action Required
If you or someone around you exhibits signs of anaphylaxis, don’t hesitate—call 911 immediately and follow their instructions. It's also crucial to check the expiration date on any Epi-Pens before heading out for your day of fun.
The Power of Epinephrine
Epinephrine, the active ingredient in Epi-Pens, acts quickly to alleviate allergic reactions by widening airways, raising heart rates, and stabilizing blood pressure. Following the right steps can mean the difference between life and death.
Be Prepared and Stay Vigilant
Even if you're not personally allergic, you could find yourself in a situation where someone else may need your assistance. Awareness and preparedness can save lives—so take a moment to educate yourself and keep an eye on those around you this summer!
