Spring Cleaning Season: Time for Caution!
As the flowers bloom and the sun shines, many of us are diving into spring cleaning—clearing out sheds, garages, and seasonal cabins. But amidst the dust bunnies and old toys, a hidden danger lurks that you need to be aware of: Hantavirus!
What is Hantavirus?
Hantavirus is a serious lung infection caused by inhaling tiny airborne particles contaminated with the saliva, urine, and droppings of rodents, particularly deer mice found in Saskatchewan. Not only can you become infected through the air, but also by touching contaminated surfaces or even being bitten by an infected mouse!
Expert Tips for Safe Cleaning!
Dr. Hortense Tabien, a medical health officer, emphasizes the importance of taking precautions while cleaning potentially contaminated areas. She advises wearing a respirator and switching to wet cleaning techniques to keep the dust from becoming airborne. "Using wet methods helps settle the particles, significantly reducing your exposure. Always wear an N95 respirator when dealing with rodent droppings," she cautions.
Spotting Symptoms: Don't Ignore the Signs!
It's crucial to recognize the symptoms of Hantavirus. Initial signs may include muscle aches, headaches, fatigue, and fever—typically manifesting within two to three weeks post-exposure. However, be particularly wary of Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, which can escalate quickly, causing shortness of breath, rapid heartbeat, and coughing as fluid builds up in the lungs.
What to Do If You Suspect Exposure?
If you feel unwell after cleaning, especially in enclosed spaces where rodents might have been, contact health services immediately at 811 for an assessment. Dr. Tabien stresses, "It's crucial to act quickly if you suspect exposure."
A History of Hantavirus in Saskatchewan
Between 1994 and 2022, Saskatchewan reported 37 cases of Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, with 13 resulting in fatalities. This statistic serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with rodent interactions.
So, as you embark on your spring cleaning journey, arm yourself with knowledge and take the necessary precautions to keep Hantavirus at bay!
