Vancouver's Streets Turned into a Speedway!
This past weekend, Vancouver police were put to the test when a daring motorcyclist decided to turn one of the city's main streets into their personal racetrack. The scene unfolded as the police clocked a sleek BMW S 1000 RR sportbike barreling down Granville Street at a jaw-dropping 136 km/h in a zone where the speed limit is a mere 50 km/h!
High-Risk Driving Defined!
According to the Vancouver Police Department, this reckless behaviour falls under the ominous category of "High-Risk Driving." A stark reminder posted on Twitter/X warned the public about the perils of high-speed riding: "136 km/h in a 50 zone is also classified as High-Risk Driving."
Caught in the Act!
The high-speed chase came to an end on the 7100 block of Granville, right by St. Stephen's United Church. It was here that the audacious rider was pulled over and slapped with a hefty $483 fine for their excessive speed—their only offense recorded during this wild ride.
More Than Just a Ticket!
But that’s not the end of the story! With the bike now impounded, the owner faces additional costs to retrieve their speed machine, which could soar into the hundreds based on towing distance and other fees. Just last month, a $450,000 Porsche driver faced a similar fate, highlighting the crackdowns on vehicular negligence in the city.
Public Outcry!
The incident sparked a wave of discussions online, with many questioning why the fine wasn’t more severe. In a clarifying tweet, the police emphasized that they enforce the laws but do not set the fines, leaving that to the authorities who govern traffic regulations.
Safety Comes First!
As thrilling as it may seem, speeding is no joke. It’s crucial for all drivers and riders to adhere to speed limits and prioritize safety for themselves and others on the road. With incidents like this making headlines, let’s hope everyone gets the message to slow down!
