Spectacular Total Lunar Eclipse Captivates Qathet Residents

A breathtaking total lunar eclipse graced the skies of Qathet last night, providing a mesmerizing spectacle for skywatchers. Thanks to the pristine weather conditions, many residents were able to witness the moon slipping into the Earth’s shadow, a celestial alignment that only happens a few times a year.

Local resident Brittany Peters captured the stunning event in a photo, showcasing the blood moon's deep reddish hue from the scenic Penticton Trails. This phenomenon occurs as the Earth casts its shadow over the moon, turning it a striking coppery red during the total eclipse.

According to NASA, the astronomical event began at 10:09 PM on Thursday, March 13, when the moon started to enter the Earth's umbra, marking the onset of the partial eclipse. As the shadow crept across the lunar surface, observers saw what appeared to be a bite being taken out of the moon. By 11:26 PM, the entire moon was enveloped in darkness, revealing its fiery red color—a sight that has sparked wonder and awe throughout history.

But the excitement didn’t end there. Today, March 14, also marks International Pi Day, a celebration of the mathematical constant π (pi), which represents the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, roughly approximated as 3.14. This day is often celebrated with educational activities and, for many, delicious pie!

As residents celebrate Pi Day, they should prepare for a wet forecast. Weatherhood predicts rain throughout the day in Qathet but expects clearer skies this evening, with temperatures reaching around 6 degrees Celsius. Looking ahead, the chance of rain remains high at 62% on Saturday and 40% on Sunday.

In related local news, Powell River Farmers' Market members announced an influx of fresh greens available at the market on Sunday, March 16, as the winter season comes to a close. With the spring market on the horizon, shoppers can look forward to a bounty of seasonal produce in the coming months.

Don’t miss out on these celestial wonders and local delights—there’s always something incredible happening in Qathet!
