Iceland is ablaze with breathtaking views as a massive volcanic eruption has unleashed a torrent of lava from a giant fissure on the Sundhnúkur crater row. This striking natural phenomenon erupted dramatically early Wednesday morning, following a flurry of earthquakes that set the stage for this fiery display.

The Icelandic Met Office confirmed that the first signs of the volcano stirring were detected around 3:56 a.m. local time. The eruption has since been ongoing, captivating onlookers with its raw power.

In a stunning showcase of nature, Iceland's Civil Protection Department released breathtaking aerial shots of the lava spewing from the fissure like a fiery waterfall, engulfing the surrounding landscape in brilliant orange and red hues.

Recent updates revealed that not only has the eruption occurred from a newly opened fissure measuring roughly 1.5 miles (2.4 km) long, but a smaller one, about 1,600 feet (500 m) in length, has also joined the fiery spectacle.

This eruption is particularly unique as it happened before the typical buildup of magma reached its usual peak. Experts indicate that only two-thirds of the magma collected under the Svartsengi area had been expelled in comparison to previous eruptions.

Although the flowing lava poses no immediate threat to infrastructure, the gas emissions from the volcano have affected air quality in nearby populated areas. Authorities reported hazardous levels of pollution in Reykjanesbær, but fortunately, these levels are beginning to decline.

Amidst the chaos, the phenomenon known as "witches' hairs" has been noted. These tiny glass fibers result from the rapid cooling of lava flows and can travel considerable distances in the wind, causing skin and eye irritation. Residents and visitors are advised to exercise caution when venturing outdoors near the eruption sites.
