NAMAO, Alta. — On a crisp autumn morning, Julie-Ann McNeilly enthusiastically steps out of her van and dives into the fascinating history of Johnny's Store, a cherished landmark believed to be one of Alberta's oldest general stores, established back in 1902.

Nestled just north of Edmonton in the small hamlet of Namao, this shop has long been more than just a retail space; it served as a community hub and even housed a post office where McNeilly's grandmother was among Alberta's pioneering postmistresses.

The store has transitioned through various owners over the years, with McNeilly's family taking over in the 1930s when her great-uncle became the shopkeeper. In 1949, McNeilly's grandfather, known as John, acquired the store, leading to the affectionate moniker 'Johnny's Store' that locals still use today.

A New Chapter for Johnny's Store

After a long closure since 2018, the McNeilly siblings, Julie-Ann and her brother Brendan, are working tirelessly to breathe new life into the beloved establishment, which is slated to reopen by November 28. Their vision includes a blend of general store staples, a cozy coffee shop, and a vibrant bar.

The spark to revive Johnny’s Store was ignited by the passing of their father in 2020, a poignant moment that reignited their desire to safeguard their family legacy, despite initial plans to sell the property.

"We grew up with the joy of coming to this store for ice cream and being part of this fantastic community,” Julie-Ann recalls. “It was important for us to honor that legacy."

Preserving the Past While Embracing the Future

The siblings have meticulously worked on renovations to pay homage to the store's historical roots while incorporating modern conveniences. Old wallpaper was peeled back to reveal authentic barn board from the early 1900s, and the walls are decorated with antique memorabilia, preserving the nostalgia.

In a nod to contemporary needs, they have created a charming coffee nook with bistro seating by a bay window, and a new bar area proudly serves Johnny’s own light lager. Notably, the siblings have implemented indoor plumbing, a significant upgrade that Julie-Ann jokes has her brother still opting for the outdoor option occasionally!

Cultural Impact and Fame

Johnny's Store, with its iconic white facade and vintage Coca-Cola signs, has even caught the eye of filmmakers, appearing in several movies and TV series. Notably, scenes from the 2003 TV film "Fargo," directed by American actress Kathy Bates, were shot on-site. The Canadian series "Blackstone" also utilized the store as a filming location.

Interestingly, the store's fame soared when friends notified Julie-Ann that they spotted Johnny's in a Netflix film featuring Liam Hemsworth and Billy Bob Thornton, titled "Cut Bank," where a notable scene involves Hemsworth racing past the store.

A Journey of Connection and Legacy

Throughout this restoration journey, the McNeilly siblings have poured their hearts into the project, creating a sense of homecoming for Julie-Ann, who returned after spending nearly two decades away.

"This experience has brought us closer, and every single day we cherish the time spent here," she reflects. "It's truly special how everything has come together."
