In a dramatic police operation, two men from Toronto were arrested after law enforcement seized a loaded firearm during a raid at an allegedly illegal cannabis dispensary located in North York. This unsettling incident unfolded on Saturday when the Toronto Police Service (TPS) executed a search warrant at a business situated near the intersection of Jane Street and Sheppard Avenue West.
Upon entering the premises, officers discovered two men, who appeared to be employees of the dispensary. In a desperate move, one of them allegedly tried to evade capture, but both suspects were quickly apprehended by the police. As part of the search, authorities also confiscated a substantial quantity of cannabis products and a significant amount of Canadian currency.
Further investigation revealed that one of the suspects was armed with a loaded handgun at the time of his arrest, raising serious concerns about public safety in illegal drug operations.
The primary suspect, 29-year-old Mohamed Ali, faces a multitude of serious charges, including unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a restricted firearm with ammunition, careless storage of a firearm, and carrying a concealed weapon, among others. Ali's charges are serious and remain unproven in court, with a bail hearing reportedly scheduled for March 9.
Meanwhile, 19-year-old Nam Nguyen has been charged with possession for the purpose of selling cannabis and possession of proceeds derived from criminal activity. His court date is set for May 8.
This incident raises vital questions about the ongoing issue of illicit cannabis trade and the potential dangers it poses to communities. As more illegal dispensaries continue to operate, citizens are urged to remain vigilant. Anyone with additional information regarding this raid or other suspicious activities is encouraged to contact the Toronto Police Service at 416-808-3100 or to reach out to Crime Stoppers anonymously.
