A Wake-Up Call for the Construction Industry

In a groundbreaking survey by Bluebeam, a leading firm in architecture, engineering, and construction solutions, alarming statistics regarding prostate cancer screening among male construction workers have come to light. Over 65% of these workers have never undergone a prostate cancer screening, and a staggering 81% admit to delaying necessary check-ups.

The Hidden Health Crisis

Prostate cancer poses a significant threat, affecting 1 in 8 men in America, yet is highly survivable when detected early. The survey highlights critical knowledge gaps and barriers that prevent timely diagnoses, underscoring the urgent need for increased awareness.

More than two-thirds of respondents aged 45-54—an age group recommended for early screening—are unclear on how frequently they should get tested. Alarmingly, about 37% didn’t even realize that a non-invasive blood test could screen for early signs of the disease.

Combatting Stigma and Fear

The findings also point to systemic issues within the industry. Close to 30% of respondents expressed that fear of potential diagnoses prevents them from seeing a doctor, while another 23% specifically fear prostate screening results. This culture of 'toughing it out' leads to dangerous delays in seeking help.

Over half (52%) of the surveyed workers admitted feeling pressured not to seek help for health concerns, with 47% citing difficulties in taking time off for medical appointments. Almost half believe that discussing health issues is stigmatized more in construction than in other sectors.

A Call to Action: The Check Yourself Initiative

In response to this health crisis, Bluebeam is partnering with ZERO Prostate Cancer to launch the impactful "Check Yourself" initiative. This program aims to break down stigmas and promote regular screenings among construction workers.

The campaign will kick off at Unbound 2025, a premier conference for AEC professionals, featuring expert speakers, exhibitions, and on-site free prostate cancer blood screenings. This partnership emphasizes the importance of early detection in saving lives.

Leadership's Personal Touch

Usman Shuja, CEO of Bluebeam, stresses the importance of preventive health and urges men in the construction arena to take their health seriously. "Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer among men, and a simple blood test can make all the difference. We have to talk about it, get tested, and take charge of our health."

The Importance of Awareness and Action

As the initiative unfolds, the focus remains on spreading education and creating an environment where construction workers feel empowered to discuss health concerns. With more than 79% of men in the industry expressing comfort in conversing about personal health with doctors, there’s hope for a cultural shift.

Bluebeam's campaign is a crucial step toward promoting health awareness and ultimately saving lives within the construction community. It's time for proactive measures against prostate cancer!
