Major Closures Announced for The Beer Store
In a surprising move, The Beer Store has confirmed a series of closures set to take effect on November 16, and the Barrie store at 299 Blake Street is on the chopping block. This location, nestled near Johnson Street in Barrie's east end, is one of several that will shut down.
Additionally, retail stores in Alexandria, Brampton, Beaverton, Cornwall, South River, and Gananoque will also be closing their doors on the same day.
Ongoing Changes in the Beer Retail Market
Ozzie Ahmed, the VP of Retail, shared the reasoning behind these closures in a recent statement. He explained, "Selling beer and collecting empties in Ontario is changing as part of marketplace expansion. To meet the needs of an evolving retail market, The Beer Store is making the difficult decision to close retail locations. We are committed to the requirements of the Early Implementation Agreement, understanding that this is tough news for consumers, recyclers, and our employees."
This announcement follows last weekend's closure of ten beer stores, with another eleven slated to follow on September 28, including the one in Bala.
A Grim Trend: Over 100 Stores Shut Since Spring 2024
Since spring 2024, The Beer Store has seen more than 100 of its locations close, marking a significant shift in Ontario’s beverage retail landscape. As consumers brace for this latest round of store closures, the future of beer retail in the province looks increasingly uncertain.
