In a striking turn of events, a popular grocery store located near the bustling intersection of Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue has been temporarily closed following a troubling DineSafe inspection.

Farm Boy’s midtown location at 2149 Yonge St. is shut down today and tomorrow, with plans to reopen at 8 a.m. on Wednesday. However, the circumstances leading to this closure are raising eyebrows.

The City of Toronto's DineSafe website revealed the store’s last inspection on September 8 flagged serious issues. Inspectors found "one or more crucial infractions" that posed immediate health hazards, including sightings of rodents and failure to protect food from contamination.

The infamous red card was issued for four infractions: two crucial for maintaining proper food safety standards and a significant violation regarding pest control. A minor infraction was also noted for unsanitary conditions in the food handling area.

Farm Boy responded in a statement to CTV News Toronto, expressing a strong commitment to food safety and cleanliness. Spokesperson Aaron Wade emphasized the seriousness of the public health order, noting the company is undertaking immediate sanitation and working closely with pest control experts.

Wade reassured customers, "We are dedicated to providing a safe and clean shopping environment and apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused." Yet, local shoppers have taken to social media, expressing shock at the closure and sharing past experiences of rodent sightings, possibly linked to nearby construction projects.

Longtime customer Sheila Matano, surprised by the locked doors during her afternoon visit, mentioned having seen some rat droppings in the rice section but reassured that she had never personally encountered pests. She suggested that timely communication from the company could help in regaining customer confidence.

Interestingly, this location had passed its previous inspection back in July 2025 with no recorded infractions. However, it received yellow conditional passes earlier this year, primarily for failing to control pest harboring.

As the community awaits Farm Boy's reopening, the focus remains on ensuring it addresses these critical health issues to restore trust among its loyal customers.
