The Numbers

Sega reported net sales of £211.6 billion ($1.39 billion), reflecting a 4.5% drop in comparison to the previous year. However, the entertainment contents segment, which includes games, showcased a promising upward trend with net sales of £141.7 billion ($931 million), marking a 16.4% increase year-on-year.

In particular, the games segment sales climbed to £95.6 billion ($628 million), a notable 22% increase compared to the same period last year.

Key Highlights

The impressive growth in Sega's gaming revenue is attributed to higher-than-expected DLC sales and strong repeat purchases, with the game Unicorn Overlord standing out as a significant contributor. Furthermore, Sega highlighted the positive influence of exchange rate fluctuations benefiting sales, as well as cost improvements within its European operations that outpaced expectations.

However, it's worth noting that sales for new titles released during the first quarter did not perform as well as hoped. New titles generated £5.6 billion ($36.8 million) in sales, a slight drop from £6.2 billion ($40.7 million) the previous year. In contrast, repeat sales surged to £22.1 billion ($145 million) for H1 FY25, compared to £17.1 billion ($112 million) during the same timeframe in FY24. Overall, game sales totaled £27.7 billion ($182 million), up from £23.4 billion ($154 million) last year.

In the realm of free-to-play games, the performance was steady—with F2P sales reaching £23.1 billion ($152 million), although slightly down from £26.9 billion ($177 million) in FY24.

Future Projections

Looking ahead, Sega anticipates a full-year net sales target of £445 billion (nearly $3 billion), projecting a 5% decline compared to FY24. For the games division specifically, the forecast predicts revenue of £235 billion ($1.5 billion), reflecting a 5% year-over-year growth.

Upcoming titles such as Metaphor: ReFantazio, Sonic x Shadow Generations, and the much-anticipated Football Manager 25 (which has been delayed to March 2025) are expected to shape these results. Additionally, fans can look forward to the new game Sonic Rumble, with Sega also projecting an increase in revenue from character licensing, driven by transmedia developments surrounding the Sonic franchise.

Major Structural Changes

Sega's financial statements also hinted at significant restructurings, including Amplitude Studios regaining its independence. This move is part of broader structural reforms taking place at Sega Europe, which included tough decisions such as the cancellation of Creative Assembly's Hyenas, the sale of Relic Entertainment, and hundreds of layoffs across various studios owned by Sega.

With these financial trends and strategic moves, Sega is poised to maintain its position within the competitive gaming industry. For gamers and fans alike, this could signal a future filled with exciting content and potential growth in beloved franchises.
