Saints Row Franchise Faces Uncertain Future
In a candid discussion about the fate of the Saints Row franchise, Saber Interactive's CEO Matthew Karch shed light on why the beloved series appears to be on the brink of extinction. During an interview, Karch attributed the franchise's downfall to escalating production costs and a lack of clear direction.
"The Saints Row team is gone," Karch revealed, underscoring the significant challenges faced by the latest installment of the franchise. He noted that the games had become prohibitively expensive without delivering the expected returns, stating, "They were so expensive for what they were. They didn't know what they were building. They didn't have any real direction. It couldn't last."
This statement seems to point towards the disappointing performance of the 2022 Saints Row reboot, which was met with mixed reviews and failed to meet commercial expectations. Publisher Deep Silver, part of the Embracer Group, reported that the reboot left fans divided. This led to a restructuring that saw the closure of Volition, the studio behind Saints Row, in August 2023.
Karch's commentary highlighted a troubling trend in the gaming industry, as he remarked, "Games with nine-figure budgets are making eight figures in revenue and that's dooming a lot of developers." He emphasized the need for the industry to mature, warning that if dramatic shifts don't happen, widespread layoffs could be on the horizon.
"The days of throwing money at games other than maybe the GTAs of the world is over," Karch declared firmly. "It's over."
The history between Karch and the teams at Volition runs deep; they were once united under the Embracer umbrella. However, the Saints Row and Red Faction franchises have now been transferred to Plaion, another entity within the Embracer Group. Meanwhile, Saber Interactive was sold in a deal valued at approximately $250 million in March 2024.
In a statement following Volition's closure, Deep Silver reassured fans that both Saints Row and Red Faction would continue to be developed under Plaion’s stewardship. However, despite this promise, fans are still waiting for any concrete developments or signals that their beloved franchises will revive.
As the gaming landscape continues to shift, many are left wondering: Is this the final chapter for Saints Row, or will a new direction bring the series back from the brink? Stay tuned for more updates as the situation unfolds!
