Gareth Edwards, the mastermind behind the acclaimed "Rogue One," is making headlines after declaring that he has no plans to return to the "Star Wars" franchise. In a revealing interview with Business Insider, he stated, "I’m very happy to move on and do my thing," signaling a definitive end to his time in the galaxy far, far away.
Released in 2016, "Rogue One" starred a star-studded cast including Felicity Jones and Diego Luna, chronicling the daring mission of rebels to steal the Death Star plans. Garnering over $1 billion at the box office and earning both critical and fan admiration, the film’s legacy has only been amplified by the success of its Disney+ spinoff, "Andor."
Despite the acclaim, Edwards humbly disagreed with the sentiments that "Rogue One" is the best film of the Disney era, saying, "I don’t agree with it, but I appreciate it. I’m very grateful that people say nice things." He elaborated that the true measure of a film's impact lies in how audiences feel about it years down the line, emphasizing that the real reward is when a fan approaches him decades later to express their love for the movie.
However, the journey to completing "Rogue One" wasn't without its challenges. The film gained notoriety for the behind-the-scenes turmoil, with reports that Lucasfilm altered Edwards' vision by bringing in Tony Gilroy to write additional scenes and dialogue. Addressing the miscommunications surrounding the production, Edwards mentioned on KCRW’s "The Business" that many inaccuracies exist regarding the film's making, asserting, "Tony came in and did a lot of great work, for sure... but we all worked together until the entire last minute."
When pressed on the mixed reports, Edwards remained gracious, stating, "I was incredibly lucky to make a 'Star Wars' film. I won the lottery in that sense. I don’t want to be the person who complains about it given how amazing the experience was."
Now, Edwards is gearing up for a new adventure as the director of "Jurassic World Rebirth," set to hit theaters on July 2. As he embarks on this exciting path, it seems he’s content to leave the Force behind.
