No More Delays: Get Tested at Your Convenience

Previously, residents had the option to receive swabs and testing kits by mail through Getakit, but this method often led to delays. For individuals facing housing insecurity or those living with family, this traditional approach posed unique challenges, making access to care difficult.

Breaking Down Barriers: A Personal Story

Adam Awad, the executive director of MAX, shared a poignant example: a young man hesitant to get tested due to fear of his parents discovering his visit to a sexual health clinic. Awad emphasized the organization's commitment to address such barriers, stating, "We’ve been collaborating with Getakit for years, and we've recognized that even online services aren't entirely barrier-free."

This initiative marks the first swab pickup site in Ontario, positioning MAX as a leader in community health innovation. With plans to expand this service throughout Ottawa and its neighboring regions, the team believes it can make a significant impact on public health.

The primary goal, according to Awad, is to curtail the spread of STIs among priority populations, especially men who have sex with men and trans women. The effort also aims to dismantle the stigma that often surrounds STI testing, making it a more approachable and normalized part of healthcare.
