Calgary Transit Takes a Stand Against Free Rides!

In an exciting new development, Calgary Transit is implementing a fresh ticket validation process aimed at ensuring that every passenger pays their fare. Starting July 16, riders on the CTrain will need to validate their mobile tickets before stepping onto the platforms, marking a significant change in transit operations.

A Unified System for Hassle-Free Travel

This initiative aims to align the ticket validation process on the trains with the system already in place on buses. Tess Abanto, manager of transit service design, explained, “We are changing the definition of valid proof of fare.” With studies revealing high rates of unactivated tickets—46% for adults and an alarming 50% for youth—this change is set to enhance fare compliance.

Tracking Ticket Troubles

The mobile ticketing system, launched back in 2020, allows riders to purchase their tickets using the My Fare app. However, the previous design enabled customers to activate their tickets anytime, which inadvertently led to misuse. “The onus is on them to self-activate,” Abanto noted, highlighting that many riders chose to delay activation when they didn’t see fare inspectors.

Navigating New Rules: What You Need to Know

Under the new rules, all mobile ticket users must now purchase, activate, and validate their tickets prior to entering train platform areas. Although officers will be assessing circumstances on an individual basis, fines of $250 still loom for those without valid proof of fare.
