Detecting breast cancer just got a monumental upgrade at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre (ARHCC), thanks to an innovative combination of advanced technologies now being utilized.
For the past year, ARHCC has employed 3-D tomosynthesis mammography to spot small, early signs of cancerous changes in breast tissue. This cutting-edge technology, while not exclusive to the region, is crucial in the fight against breast cancer. "This technology has allowed us to detect cancers that would have otherwise remained hidden until they became more severe," stated Corlea Smit, the mammography supervisor at ARHCC.
But that's not all. The facility has recently introduced contrast-enhanced diagnostic mammography, an advancement that enables doctors to distinguish between healthy and malignant tissues far more effectively. This state-of-the-art technique has significantly sharpened diagnostic accuracy, making cancer detection quicker and easier.
In a notable achievement for the Fraser Health region, ARHCC has become the first health care facility to merge both 3-D tomosynthesis and contrast-enhanced diagnostic mammography, joining only two other hospitals in British Columbia with this powerful diagnostic combination. This groundbreaking approach, supplemented by the acquisition of two breast ultrasound rooms along with additional ultrasound equipment, has vastly improved the cancer diagnosis process for over 22,000 patients who undergo breast imaging at ARHCC annually.
"Equipped with this new technology, our dedicated team plays a pivotal role in ensuring that we provide top-notch care to cancer patients," expressed Charmaine Bergen, a breast sonographer at ARHCC.
