Whales embark on incredible journeys, traversing thousands of miles across the ocean. Yet, during these long migratory routes, they often cross perilous shipping lanes that pose a serious threat—being struck by fast-moving vessels, which can lead to fatal consequences.
In a groundbreaking effort to protect these magnificent creatures, researchers at the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWDG) and the University of La Laguna (ULL) are harnessing the power of AI technology developed by Sea.AI.
This innovative system detects movements beneath the surface of the water, alerting ship navigators to the presence of whales that may be invisible from onboard. This crucial information enables ships to adjust their course, dramatically reducing the likelihood of deadly collisions.
Understanding Whales for Better Protection
"Our goal is to gain deeper insights into whale behavior near the surface and mitigate harmful interactions with human activities," explains Carlos Efrén Mora Luis from the University of La Laguna.
But that’s not all! This cutting-edge technology will also deliver real-time data, equipping researchers with the tools they need to track and monitor whale populations more effectively.
Emilie De Loose, leader of the IWDG project, is optimistic that this advancement will create "new opportunities to enhance whale conservation efforts amid increasingly crowded shipping routes."
A Hopeful Future for Whales
As the world’s oceans get busier, innovations like this are critical in the fight to safeguard whale populations. With AI steering the course, a safer future may be on the horizon for these majestic giants.
