Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre is at the forefront of early breast cancer detection, performing over 22,000 breast imaging exams annually, including a mix of screening, diagnostic assessments, and ultrasound procedures. This substantial volume highlights the hospital's critical role in the fight against breast cancer, providing timely and essential care.

In a groundbreaking move for 2024, the Diagnostic and Screening Mammography and Breast Ultrasound departments have experienced significant growth with the introduction of 3D tomosynthesis mammography. This cutting-edge technology, although previously available at select Fraser Health hospitals, is proving to be indispensable for identifying subtle, early changes in breast tissue. According to Corlea Smit, the supervisor of Mammography at ARHCC, recent cases have revealed cancers that could have gone unnoticed without this advanced imaging technique—emphasizing its vital importance in preventative care.

As part of these advancements, Abbotsford Hospital has made a remarkable leap by becoming the first facility in Fraser Health and the third in British Columbia to offer contrast-enhanced diagnostic mammography. This innovative method enhances imaging capabilities by distinguishing healthy tissue from cancerous growths, particularly benefiting women with dense breast tissue—traditionally a challenge for early detection even with the latest 3D technology.

To further improve patient experience, the hospital has introduced new features and equipment, including two dedicated breast ultrasound rooms outfitted with pink stretchers, comfortable ultrasound chairs, and a more inviting atmosphere thanks to donations from the Crystal Gala Foundation. These thoughtful design choices create a calming environment for patients undergoing potentially distressing diagnostic procedures, as noted by patient advocate Elsie Teichrob.

"Our amazing team of sonographers, mammographers, and radiologists are committed to providing the highest standard of care and support for each patient," says Charmaine Bergen, a breast sonographer at the centre. "We are incredibly proud to offer these revolutionary services to the residents of the Fraser Valley, making a real difference in the early detection and treatment of breast cancer."

With these cutting-edge technologies and a compassionate care team, Abbotsford Regional Hospital is setting the standard for breast cancer detection, paving the way for earlier interventions and saving countless lives in the process. As community awareness around breast health continues to grow, the advancements at ARHCC are a beacon of hope in the fight against this disease.
